Happy Heavenly Birthday, Granddad
And Everything Remarkable Grew From There
Today would have been my grandfather's birthday. A life lived with purpose, led with presence, and one that left every room a little better than he found it. He left us in 2019 — but on a morning like this one, quiet and reflective, he is very much here. I find myself reaching for words that feel worthy of him. I'm not sure any exist. But I'll try.
There is a particular kind of knowledge that can't be found in a textbook, a course, or a certification program. It lives in kitchens. On porches. In the way a man carries himself into a room. In the standard he sets without ever raising his voice. My grandfather was my first teacher in that tradition — and the most important one I've ever had.
He taught me the basics. Not the transactional kind. The foundational kind. How to be present. How to honor your word. How to look a man in the eye and mean what you say. How to take care of your people before you take care of yourself. How to build something that lasts.
That was the lesson I didn't understand until much later. I was looking for speeches. What I was actually receiving was architecture. Every consistent action, every standard held, every choice to stay — it was all framing the house I would eventually build my life inside.
"The basics aren't simple. They're rare. A man who shows up, keeps his word, loves his people, and leaves something behind — that's not ordinary. That's extraordinary. That's a remarkable life."
I've spent years chasing complexity — systems, strategy, credentials, frameworks. And somewhere along the way I realized: the most sophisticated thing I know about living well, I learned before I was old enough to drive. He planted that seed. Everything else has been the growing.
So today I want to do something that feels right for a birthday that deserves honoring. I want to put something out into the world in his name. I want to introduce you to the work I've been quietly building — work that, at its core, carries his fingerprints.
My name is Louis. Most people in this community know me as MrRemarkable. I'm a strategist, a systems thinker, a beekeeper in the philosophical sense — someone who builds environments designed for organic flourishing. By day I lead technology transformation inside government agencies. By calling, I write about what it means to live with intention.
I publish through The Remarkable Hive — a community platform rooted in sustainability, mindfulness, and the kind of practical wisdom you can actually use. The hive isn't metaphor for decoration. It's my operating philosophy: design the system thoughtfully, tend it with care, then let it work.
I've been writing for years. But it wasn't until I started documenting the lessons I received from the people who shaped me — my grandfather chief among them — that the writing became something I was proud to put my name on.
Before the series, there were these two. They're where I found my voice — and where many readers found their footing.
What happens when a man stops performing gratitude and starts practicing it? This is the honest account of that shift — and the discipline it takes to sustain it.

This is the work I was born to do. Today, on his birthday, it feels right to finally say that out loud.
"Happy Birthday, Granddad. You didn't live to see the books — but every word in them is yours."
